New Mexico Art Tells New Mexico History
New Mexico Art Tells New Mexico History is a journey through the New Mexico Museum of Art’s rich collection of paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs bringing our state’s artistic heritage to you, the owners of these works—students, teachers, families, and art and history lovers. We have selected images highlighting New Mexico’s history and cultural traditions from pre-Conquest to our present day. Four themes: Pueblo People, Opening the West, Growing New Mexico, and People Places and Politics offer you a view into the life and times of New Mexico and New Mexicans as our state grew and developed.
The Humanities Project
The Humanities Project is an online platform designed around distinct curriculum modules, each of which offers multiple ways to engage audiences with content appropriate for learners of varying educational levels. The project draws from both iconic and less recognizable works from NMMOA’s permanent collection and archives, creating additional opportunities to digitize and make available a greater portion of the collection. To fully demonstrate the relationship between the visual arts and any one of the humanities, curricula might, for example, utilize animations, online games, three-dimensional modeling, or videos with commentary from scholars, artists, or community leaders. Content is provided in both English and Spanish. The site also features a machine-language-powered translation plugin that allow users to experience the site in five different languages.
The project aims to introduce the Museum’s collection to new audiences through insightful and innovative educational programming, designed to further knowledge about art and the associated humanities. The initial curriculum compliment K-12 coursework, providing educators with additional means of enriching their lesson plans. Content is developed with guidance of an advisory board comprised of five individuals representing diverse humanities’ disciplines, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Material responds to state curricular standards and is suited for specific educational levels. Mid- to long-term, the project will expand to include university students and lifelong learners across all geographies.
