Writing the Modernist Southwest

JANUARY 13, 2016

A group of young, experimental authors moved to the Southwest in the early twentieth century. They saw the Southwest as a confluence of ancient and modern aesthetics and believed that Southwestern culture had the potential to revolutionize American arts and letters. This talk considers literary manifestos about the Southwest in the context of visual Southwestern modernism, suggesting that these works reflect the Southwest’s significant influence on American modernism.
